monument to monument wrap up

  • 5 of us left baltimore at 8:15 AM. There were many no-shows. they got caught be fear, reason, or the aftermath of the previous evening. 1 fixed gear, 4 road bikes.
  • met up with 2 members of the SSOFT in Elkridge. 2 more fixed gears.
  • met up with a random guy rolling on a really nice seven road bike in Laurel. He asked where we were riding to, and decided to join in.
  • took this picture @ a 7-11.
  • we don't need no gas!
  • In College Park, we lost our first rider (pre-planned). Jen parted ways and hopped in my pre-stationed getaway car and drove back to Baltimore.
  • in DC we about doubled in size. all but one on fixed gears (2 more SSOFT members, they rep hard).  I suspect that Steve will probably write something up about it.
  • DC riders were fresh and ready to go, some baltimore riders (especially me) had a little less vigor and vim.
  • lost our second rider to some non drive side crank problems in beltsville.
  • made it back to Baltimore later than expected. Some riders, and by “some riders” I actually mean just me, were totally fried and rolled in the last 20 miles at a snail’s pace.
  • Brewer’s Art French Fried made everything better.
  • DC folks hit the road at 7 PM hopefully not too much darkness on their way home.

    quick follow up:
Jon made it back to Elkridge OK before the darkness and storms hit.
Steve and Kathy got a ride from Baltimore back to DC
The rest of the DC crew made it to mile 75 before the threats of darkness and thunderstorms thwarted their plans.

Next year (if we do it again), I’ll have to figure out something better for the departure times so no one has to get home too late. sorry guys.

So, the other DCists bailed at some point on the ride back? That storm was pretty heavy at times; would have sucked a bit to have been out there under those conditions.

I ended up with 73 miles, since I rode from home in Arlington out and then back home from Kathy’s place in Shirlington.

Nice ride, well-executed (other than the late starts, ha); thanks for putting it together. Next one leaves earlier and spends more quality time in the bars…

sounds awesome! it wouldve totally killed me but i’m still pretty intent on doing it at some point this summer.

after meeting the kids from illini4000 (www.illini4000.org) when they crashed at our house, i realized you just have to go for it. many of them had never done any distance biking and were now biking an average of 85 miles a day to get across the country by august. it seemed really rewarding for them to just know that they were doing it.

Great Ride, thanks for organizing. Next time, we’ll work out the timing so there is no excuses for the DC folks. Just kidding, glad everyone made it home safe and sound.
